D300 NEF problems

I'm running Helicon Focus 4.2.1 on a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.8. HF works fine with JPEGs but processing NEF yields an image that is very low resolution and is processed in literally seconds as opposed to the minutes a similar JPEG stack takes.

It's as tho HF is processing thumbnails rather than the actual NEF's.

Can anyone tell me what is happening here?

Helicon Focus completely relies on OS when reading RAW files. Please see this page for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475

The page says that "Mac OS X Leopard provides system-level support for digital camera RAW format" and that the Nikon d300 is "Supported by Mac OS X v10.5.2 or later".

I don't have problems opening and processing D300 NEF files in Adobe Camera Raw nor in Picasa.

So is there something I should be doing to get Helicon Focus to load D300 NEFs?

ACR and Picasa may use their own raw converters so please check if standard mac programs can open your nef files with full resolution. If it is so, please upload your file to ouf ftp server (as described at http://www.heliconsoft.com/ftp.html) for our tests.

Aperture, iPhoto and Preview are all able to read the D300 NEF files at full resolution

Another observation is that I've now found that some D300 NEF files can be imported at apparently full resolution while other D300 NEFs seem to be imported at thumbnail resolution.

I have exactly the same problem with Nikon D3x RAW (NEF) files. So it may be more universal.

We tried but were not able to reproduce the bug with your files on 10.5.8. Do you run Helicon Focus in 32 or 64 bit mode? Does it happen if you add the first file after Helicon Focus launch or after adding more files? Please send us console log after the image is not added (Applications\Utilities\Console)

I had problems with NEF files and a D300s under OSX 10.6. Same symptoms. Since an update of OSX in december 09 everything works fine!

Same problem here with raw files from a D300 and using Helicon 4.2.1 on an imac with OS 10.6.2 with all latest updates. Helicon produces an image with a resolution of 72 ppi. If I convert the raw photos to PSD,Tiff orJPEG files prior to rendering with Helicon the resulting resolution is 240.

I wonder if this problem is specific to the D300 or does it affect all NEF files? Are other raw file types affected? I have tried DNG files because I can easily convert the NEF files to DNG but the problem remains.

Please check the actual width and height of the resulting image in pixels. DPI or PPI has no direct affect on the resolution and quality of the image. DPI is only used to convert pixels into inches for printing or displaying on monitor.

The width and height are the same but your statement that PPI has no direct affect on resolution is a bit puzzling for me since PPI is how you measure resolution. I will have to research this in order to fully
understand your comment.
