Remote Use With Stackshot Rail and an Android Tablet

Post by stevemcbill »

Dear Stas,

A question if I may - I have had the Helicon Suite for a few months now and am happy with it - thank you guys very much indeed. I have been using Remote on a Nexus-10 tablet connected to my Canon 7D Mk-II with a 100mm L series macro lens.

However, I have now purchased a Stackshot Rail and Controller which I want to use with the Canon 7d Mk-II and a Canon MP-E65 lens along with the Nexus tablet. Reading the Cognisys website (https://www.cognisys-inc.com/how-to/sta ... onnect.php) it seems that Helicon software requires 2 USB cnnections (1 to the Rail Controller box and 1 to the camera) unlike Zerene wich uses one USB connection to the Rail Controller and a separate Shutter Interface cable from the Controller to the Camera.

This may be a problem for me as the Nexus-10 tablets only has 1 single micro-USB port. Does this mean I cannot use the tablet as a controlling device or can I use a splitter to provide 2 USB connections at the tablet ??? Is anybody else using an Android device with only 1 micro-USB connector along with a Canon camera and the Stackshot Rail and Controller ??

Many thanks for your help in this matter.

Steve

Android generally has no problem with USB hubs. However, Helicon for Android simply doesn't support Stackshot.

If Helicon/Android/Stackshot is a no go, then is Helicon/Windows/Stackshot an option? I'm looking for both cabled and wifi options to go with a tablet for in the field but also a Stackshot rail for in studio too.

What is the best setup, in terms of versatility?

Thanks :)

Windows and Mac version of Helicon Remote do support Stackshot. There's no difference between the two, although the Windows version might be a tiny bit more trouble-free.

So a Windows based tablet, Helicon (Focus or Remote) and Stackshot should be a good combination?

It should be. A tablet or a laptop. I don't see any reason to go for a super-mobile computing device (read: less convenient to use with desktop software) when you have to bring very non-mobile Stackshot anyway.

Stas,

Is there any intention, or indeed any likelihood, of Remote on Android working with Stackshot in the future ?? It is something I would be VERY keen to see happen.

Steve :)
