It's a feature of recent Nikon cameras. In some modes it turns on exposure simulation (live view brightness depends on exposure settings), in some other modes it doesn't. Experiment with exposure modes to determine how it works. I believe in M mode you can manipulate live view brightness by changing eV value. It doesn't affect the resulting image (in M mode), but it will affect LV.

Just want to clarify: it's a feature (or a bug, hard to tell, really) of a camera body and we can't do anything about it because there's just no way to control it. I recall that live view was workable not only in S but in other modes as well. Unfortunately, we don't have our D800 right now so I can't try and tell you how to defeat this issue.

Sorry but Helicon remote do il OK with Nikon 800 when the program is on "S" and only "S" no P,A and M and when is on "S" the correction EV is too OK.
If use the flash the screen is all Black.
So I setting the sharpness the camera is on "S" the creen is good when to shooting the the flash I setting the camera on "M" with the good time 1/125 sec and the good apperture f/16 and the screen begin too black
