New file saving format

Unread postby Hubbabub » 07.04.2004 10:31

How about adding the PNG format as a new file saving format ?

It produce smaller files then BMP and has a lossless file compression.

As far as I know PNG has high (lossless) compression rate only for images with small number of colors.

In the next version 100%-quality JPEG (lossless) will be supported. It has high compression rate and preserves all details.

I know that PNG is maybe not the best format for photos,
but I say again "PNG produce a smaller truecolor file then a BMP file"

Example
A 1600x1200 image with 271736 unique colours.
BMP = 5.760Mb
PNG = 2.857Mb
(Converted in IrfanView v3.85 from a JPG saved photo (461Kb))

I'm looking forward to test it :)

Keep up the good work

Lossless JPEG would be obsolete when supporting PNG.
24bit PNG compression is a better lossless compression than the JPEG equivalent. Note that lossless "JPEGing" is not DCT based but a differential coding dependent on neighbour pixel values. PNG does this job better and is highly better supported by existing software.
There are also free libraries available.

Thank you for this great freeware tool :)
