Linear DNG in Helicon Filter

Unread postby Daniel Forsman » 22.07.2015 08:52

I am new to Helicon Filter, and only using the try-out-version, but I am impressed by many of the functions. :D But one thing bothers me: When opening a Linear-DNG that is supposed to have 48/16-bit, Helicon Filter claims it has 24/8-bit :? Is this just a bug? Does Helicon Filter treat it like a 16-bit file or does it reduce it to 8-bits? The latter would destroy some of the nice tonality from my Sigma Quattro files.

Please send us RAW file for checks. Some RAW files are 8 bit indeed, but most probably the program is not able to get full information about your RAW file. We use Exiv2 library, the best one to read EXIF but I suspect your RAW files is not yet supported.

I have now uploaded two files to your FTP.
They are linear DNG, coming from a new X3F-converter called Kalpanika. That converter are still in a prototype-version, so unfortunately the EXIF will not be correctly transferred from the X3F-file to the linear DNG. Could that fool Helicon Filter into thinking that it is a 24/8-bit file?

We will try to update RAW libraries to support your files. Hopefully we will do in the coming release.

Thank you!

Does this mean that they only work with 8-bit per channel right now? I just wanted to clarify for anyone reading this post that the files do work fine in Helicon already now, but I'd better be sure to work with files that are 16-bits per channel to make sure that as little color information as possible is lost when preparing output files.

We fixed an error which was responsible for reporting 8 bit depth for all raw files, so next release should behave better.
