Strange Behavior

Unread postby mrsnarky » 08.09.2005 20:56

I just learned about Helicon Filter (version 3.10.2) and I think it is an outstanding tool! I was all set to buy the Pro version, but then I discovered something, which made me think that it may not be the right product for me. Specifically, it appears that it has trouble opening/processing the RAW files from my Fujifilm E550 (.RAF). When the files come out of the camera, they are about 13mb; 4048x3040 pixels. I confirmed this using the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in (version 3.1). However, when I open the same .RAF file with Helicon, it shows only 1600x1200 pixels. Even after I saved the file as a .TIF it still only had 1600X1200 pixels (confirmed by Photoshop CS2). Something's not right.

Thinking this might be a problem with the .RAF converter, I used Adobe's DNG converter to convert my test image to a .DNG. The results were "interesting". The image now had a resolution of 2888x2168 pixels (close, but not quite). The really odd thing was that the image was flipped! It was like looking through a negative! Opening the .DNG file in CS2, it had the correct resolution (4048x3040) and the proper orientation.

As Helicon Filter is exactly what I'm looking for (I'm only have the 30-day evaluation version of CS2), I'm hoping this is something that you can correct in a future version.

Thank you.

UPDATE - I have determined that this problem only occurs when I use the stand-alone version. When using Helicon Filter as an Adobe plug-in, all picture settings are as they are supposed to be; even the .DNG files are properly oriented. :?

Of course we will fix it. As you know, most RAW format are closed and allmost all converters use producer's SDK to work with them. So the resutl should be pretty the same with all converters.

I would appreciate if you could upload this RAF to our server:

Yep, I have checked it.

The 1600x1200 image you are seeing is the JPEG preview embedded in
the RAF file.

To add support for this model we need your sample file.
