Has there been progress in using the Canon Wi-Fi adaptor W-E1 for wireless tethering to Helicon Remote?

I use the W-E1 also with a 7D mark II. That would be such a cool feature in Helicon Remote 8)

Does it work similarly to built-in Wi-Fi, by creating a Wi-Fi network to which you connect the mobile app?

Yes, but it (WE-1) is just like "tethered" in that it is ad hoc or only between the camera and the device. There may be a way to connect to a WiFi infrastructure, but when I was setting up mine, it just wanted the device and I didn't see an option to go to a network.
The problem I see with this device (WE-1) is I'm not sure it would work without the EOS Utility. It has to be open to connect, but even tethering triggers the EOS Utility to open. In case you are not familiar with the EOS Utility, It is provided by Canon with all of their cameras and allows remote shooting, camera configuration, firmware updates, etc.

I've been thinking about this WiFi tethering and really don't believe it would be a very good option, at least not for me: 1) The WE-1 is barely able to reach 802.11n speeds (my laptop has 802.11AC) and that is when you are within 10 feet of it, and, that is being generous. 2) To shoot a stack over 3-5 shots would be an incredibly slow download, 25MB+/- raw files or 50MB+/- for the 5DS. 3) The WE-1 only has a range of 25 feet, per Canon, but my tests with the EOS Utility and the WE-1, shooting remotely, are less than stellar. It works, but is kind of slow in receiving my commands over 10 feet. It is very quick when the camera is withing 5 feet of my laptop. So a 6 foot USB 3 tether is the fastest way to go, in my opinion.
Of course, these are from my experience with this device, WE-1, in the 7D mark II. Other cameras with "built in" WiFi may work better.
**edit** All of the above is under the assumption that you would want the best quality stacks. If you set your camera to smaller JPeG's, I'm sure it would be a much faster transfer.

I hope this helps.

In principle, I don't see why W-E1 shouldn't work with Helicon Remote, you can try connecting the two the same you would connect to a camera with a built-in Wi-Fi module: activate Wi-Fi in the camera, run Helicon Remote, connect to the camera's Wi-Fi network, switch back to Remote and give it some 10-20 seconds to detect the camera. It might just work.
But I get it that you're no longer even interested in this setup.

I agree, Stas, it should work. When you activate the WE-1 it does show up in Windows WiFi availability connections. So if HR will detect a camera via WiFi, it should work.
Although I am no longer interested, the OP probably still is. But I see they have not been in on this conversation since asking the question. I may give it a try somewhere down the line, just to see if it will work. I have another Canon camera with "built in" WiFi, but it's relatively new to Canon's line up, so Helicon staff may not have had a chance to test it. It's a Canon Rebel EOS T7i, which is a pretty nice camera BTW, light as a feather for a DSLR with great image quality. I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with Helicon Remote.

T7i is definitely compatible via Wi-Fi.
