Does anyone have the steps for linking D500 to Helicon Remote, I have no trouble with my D750

Wireless connection to D500 is not supported by Helicon Remote, and possibly never will be due to the way this camera works. Note that D500 not and never was on the list of cameras that Helicon Remote supports wirelessly (http://www.heliconsoft.com/supported-cameras/ , bottom of the page).
I used to think D500 should work but now I realize I was wrong - apologies for the misleading previous replies on this matter.

Stas, You don't say what it is about the D500 that is different to make it incompatible, so do think that the D500 is an "oddball" in this respect or do think that the incompatibilities with Remote are going to be a trend with more new Nikon cameras?

I don't know if it's going to be a trend. D500 is closely tied to the Nikon's app and is difficult (if at all feasible) to be made to work without it.

Stas,

do you think same issue will be for D5600 as it runs wifi same way as D500.

You can't connect to the camera through wifi on your own. you need to do it through the Snapbridge app.

but I still can see D5600 listed as compatible with wifi. I tried many times and gave up

D5600 has been listed there mistakenly. As of this moment, Helicon Remote doesn't support Nikon cameras that require Snapbridge.
