Auto Exposure

I have searched the forum under the word exposure but, haven't found anything on point. I also believe that I have read all the comments about time saving as to stacks. It appears that manual exposure is a significant time savings. However, I was not happy with the exposure of my shots (Nikon D800). Therefore, what procedure would one do to auto expose for the first shot but, shoot at that exposure in manual?

Shoot in auto exposure mode, make note of the exposure settings that the camera has chosen and set these parameters manually? I don't think there's any way to automate this procedure completely.
