Suddenly stopped focussing

I am using a Nikon D5300 105mm Macro lens connected to a MacBook Pro. Two days ago everything was working fine. Since then no new software or hardware has been added and the physical connections are unchanged.

This morning, when I try a Focus stack, I get the following problem. I can use the focussing arrows once (one click), then they cease to work. In addition most of the other functions are frozen while the 'focussing' cogwheel at the bottom rotates for up to two minutes. When it stops, I can use the camera settings, but the focussing arrows still have no effect.

I cannot think of anything I am doing differently, but if someone has an idea, I would be grateful.

Could be something in the camera body settings. Try resetting them.
