No image on screen

I have Helicon Remote connected to my Nikon D5300 and to Stackshot. When I start up, Stackshot is recognized but there is no way to know what the camera is seeing. Fast Preview is grayed out and neither Take Picture or Live view have any effect. I suspect I have missed some key step, but after going through the manual several times, I can't find what I am doing wrong.
