set focus only if lens in automatic?

as a new user I'm experimenting and I have a question: my Nikon D700 / Mikro 105mm lens will only react on lens focus / positioning commands of Helicon remote if the lens is set to automatic focus (A/M setting) - is this the way the software is supposed to work or am I missing something?

Yes, this is correct. The camera can control the lens only if it is in AF mode.
