Remote software not working

Post by ladamache »

I've had Helicon Focus Pro installed on my workstation (Vista Pro 64 bit) and it seems to work fine. I wanted to try out Helicon Remote to do some flower macros, so I downloaded & installed it on my laptop (Vista business 32 bit). I connected my Canon 1DS III to my laptop & it works fine with the EOS utility. When I start up Helicon Remote, the large window shows camera not connected, but small window in top right shows it connected. At this point, the software and the camera seem to freeze - I can't operate either. I tried this several times & re-installed the software with same result. Is it possible that 64 bit software has been installed on my 32 bit laptop? I need to shut down Remote with the Task Manager. There have been some application error access violation messages as a result.
What have I been doing wrong? Any suggestions?

I suspect that small window is some other application (Canon Utility?) and this application uses connection with the camera. I suggest to close this application and then start Helicon Remote. This should help. If not, a printscreen of your desktop would help us to understand the problem.

Hi Stas
Thanks for replying.
I used the wrong terminology in my post. The place where my camera shows up is in the top of the "camera settings" box (not window) in the top right-hand corner of Helicon Remote screen. No other applications are running. The top LCD on my camera has a "busy" signal.
No point in showing a printscreen as there is nothing else showing on the Helicon Remote Screen except the "spinning circle" showing it is busy (hung).

Larry,

Please download http://www.heliconsoft.com/downloads/HeliconRemote.zip and unpack it into Helicon Focus folder.

Hi Stas

I installed the changes to Helicon Remote that you made available. Unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed. When I open Helicon Remote, I have access to the software, but when I turn the camera on there is a noise that sounds like the mirror is locking up then Helicon Remote hangs. Task Manager shows "Helicon Remote not responding". If I turn off the camera there is another click that sounds like the mirror is going down.

If I restart Helicon Remote, clicking on the session logs results in an error message: Access Violation at address 754521DC (or other address) in Secur32.dll. Read of address 0000000C.

I opened these logs with a text editor. The references to Nikon seem strange.

I hope this is of some help.

Regards
Larry

Larry,

Thanks for the log. No news so far. We can't reproduce the bug and can't understand why it can happen. We are now working on internally new version and hopefully the bug will be fixed. Please wait a couple of weeks.

i have noticed that certain errors will cause the remote program to hang up. try formatting your memory card in the camera and restarting the computer/ software. shooting with mirror lock-up and using the shot preview buttons seemed to make the hang-ups more likely.

Hi Russ

Thanks for your suggestions. I always reformat the memory card in my camera and I've already tried your other suggestions as well as other possibilities. I've tried this on both my laptop and my desktop Windows Vista systems with the exact same results. Helicon Remote (including the latest version) hangs as soon as the camera is turned on and Windows Task Manager reports that Helicon Remote is not responding. The Canon remote utility seems to work OK however.

On the chance that it might be a problem with my camera (1 DS3) I just sent it in to Canon Service Centre for checking.

Re: Remote software not working

Hi Stas

I finally got my camera back from Canon. They checked the remote function and could not find anything wrong with the camera. Today, I tried again to connect with Helicon Remote 1.19 Beta and I get the same response as before. I open Helicon Remote and I can navigate around the "preferences" and "help" on the program. I then turn my camera on and it shows up in the "camera settings" box then Helicon Remote freezes. Windows Task Manager show the program is not responding.

I've now downloaded and installed several versions of Helicon Remote and the same thing happens.

Are there any settings on my camera that could be causing this behavior?

Regards
