Distance between shots ?

Post by JPS »

Hi ! I'm trying Helicon Remote and I would like to know HOW MUCH each figure in Distance between shots represent in milimeters or centimeters ?

I'm using a Nikon D700 with a Tamron SP90 macro set at f/16, and I found that, at a distance (nearest) of 55 cm., with an object of 18 cm. "deep", I needed 13 shots to get the whole thing sharp ! I used 15 as "Distance between shots" !

Below's the eyeglasses I shot with Helicon Remote ! BUT... I'd still would like to know what the "Distance between shots" correspond to, or what is the ratio to apply ?!?

We measure distance between shots in focusing steps. There is no simple way to translate it into mm or cm because this depends on the lens type, aperture and distance to the object. You may find DOF calculators online. Still, they will give you only a rough estimate and you would have to check it anyway.

I would suggest to use the value from DOF calculator of Helicon Remote as a starting value and by find the correction factor for your lens. Once you found this factor, the DOF calculator will give you quite exact estimate for a given aperture.

Thanks for the answer, Stas !

But what I meant was: in the little FOCUS BRACKETING window, after having used the DOF calculator, hence knowing the DOF I need AND after having saved the nearest (or furthest) point (in my example a minimum of 18 centimeters), the program should normally a be able to tell me the distance between shots, no ?

For me, it goes like that: 18 cm. divided by, say, 12 shots = 1.5 cm. = distance minimum between the shots !

...or am I wrong ?

Yes, if the program know the total distance and number of shots it can determine the distance between shots ( = (farthest - nearest)/(number of shots-1))

But again, it calculates the distance in focusing steps, not cm. Please send us a printscreen of the interface, that would help me to understand what you mean.

The focussing steps = the number of shots minus 1, no ?

"-1" appears because if you make 3 shots you need to make only 2 movements (3-1) between them.
