We are also not happy with AF Calibrator and we will not include this functionality in 2.x version till we find better solution. The algorithm itself is ok but impementation in the camera is very strange. For example, we find that after calling autofocus function from SDK, the camera stars to ingnore some for the focusing steps. We are looking for workaround.
