Upgrade 4.70 memory problems

Unread postby pa234m » 15.10.2015 19:28

Hi, I have been using v4.20 for long time and enjoyed it. Today I received the 4.70 upgrade and on doing a rescan, it stopped with several 'Error, Not enough memory ...' windows and froze.

I use a quad core Intel CPU and have around 55,000 images in my base. The PC runs Win 7 x64 with 8 Gig of RAM. Using 'Task manager', memory use seems to be around 4+ GB when this happens. It seems to do the scanning MUCH faster up the point of crash than v4.20.

I restored v4.20 and scanned the whole data again without any such crash. They were the same images as before. I have never had the memory notices before. The scan did seem MUCH slower with v4.20 - using about 2.4 GB of the RAM so, if it were possible, I would like to adopt v4.70 if I could get it to work.

Any suggestions/solutions?

We will check and compare these versions in our environment. Which OS do you use?

Hi, I am using Win 7 x64 for some years now. The scan I am referring to is a full scan of all the images. v4.2 will plough through to the end (takes quite a time but no complaints). v4.7 will stall quite early on (not consistent when it stops) with a string of those pop-up memory windows as posted in OP. So I guess it's using memory which it doesn't return to the pool completely.
I can work if I only scan in small sections of my library at a time but occasionally I want to perform a new full input from scratch.
Love the new 'similar image' facility, etc., so I would eventually like to upgrade but I want to be confident in its reliability before I discard v4.2 which I have come to rely on.

By the way, is there any way of rescanning multiple images with missing thumbnails, which sometimes happens, without having to perform a complete rescan. Similarily, is there any way to remove multiple orphan thumbnails when the original image files have been removed from the Library, also without a complete rescan.

Thanks for any help.

We are working now on fixing the bug with the scan now. The problem is we cannot reproduce it with our test environment so we just check the code for possible errors.

You can right click the folder and rescan it. Or you can select images in the browser, right click and rescan them.

As to orphan thumbnails, the program should delete all of them in the current folder after you click one of them. The program detects that original file is missing and performs the check for other thumbnails in the folder.

Thank you for your reply.

Just to complete the picture, the messages shown read as follows:- 'Error, Not enough memory . If you are using Windows XP it is recommended to set 3GB switch. (Search for '3GB boot.ini')'

I am actually using win7 x64 with 8GB RAM so no such should be needed. Out of interest, I did set the 3GB switch with no effect.

The problem occurred with version 4.70, both the '06 September 2015' release and the '08 October 2015' as well.

Thank you. I have just downloaded 4.71 and run a large scan on my saved images. 20% of the way through I got the same memory messages as before and it ground to a halt. We are talking 11,000 images scanned to that point. Then, looking at memory used it had abruptly risen just before the messages came up.

Currently, I have Photo Safe Pro v4.20 for scanning and v4.71 for normal use. The 4.20 version still scans all 55,000 images in one long scanning without messages or stalling. They are both installed on the same Core2 Quad Win7 x64 8GB RAM PC.

Humbly, I confess it is beyond my skills to diagnose this problem.

We need more information to find the error.

1) There are several ways to rescan sabneyly:

1. Rescan command on My computer (or other folder) in Folder Tree popup menu.
2. Backup and Restore database
3. Create new database.
4. Ignore/unignore folder in Folder Tree

Which way do you use?

2) How much memory does the program occupy during the scan, in the normal state it should be 300 - 400 mb?
We do not think that the lack of a memory associated with the parameters of your system. Rather lack of memory cause some image files that are processed with an error.

3) Does your program send a Bug report if an error occurs?

Please answer the questions, and we will continue to search for errors. In the near future we will update the program.

Image8.jpg
Same scanning as below. Even though the scanning had stopped (see CPU value 00) helicon Photo Safe still occupied 1,602,360 K
(220.58 KiB) Not downloaded yet
Image7.jpg
This shows 10 minutes of scanning in v4.71. See how physical memory went high and stayed there even though CPU usage dropped to only 2%. On v4.20 the memory dropped back to about 1.2 GB which is its normal standby value
(257.7 KiB) Not downloaded yet

I used to rename the database and save it for later restoration, then 3) (above) create new database. Recently, I tried 1) 'Rescan' with the same results.

In v4.20 it used 120MB > 500MB mostly but occasionally went to a peak of almost 2GB but then came back down to previous and continued without any insufficient memory indication. In versions 4.70 & 4.71 it ranged similarly but sometimes did not return to the lower value. I have screen captures of the Task Manager display in v4.70 which I have attached.

3) Does your program send a Bug report if an error occurs?

It did yesterday once, but I was doing something else too on the PC so I would discount that.

Please answer the questions, and we will continue to search for errors. In the near future we will update the program.

By the way, is there any way of including pixel dimensions in 'File Size' to thumbnail caption templates as displayed when showing an image in the browser e.g. (0.5Mp 800x668)?

Thank you for testing our software and for sharing your professional opinion. It helped us find and fix critical memory leaks during scanning. As compared to the version 4.20 weve completely changed the mechanism of creating thumbnails which caused unstable operation of the program.
After we sent you the 4.80 beta version weve fixed some of the major bugs. We hope that you will be happy with the release version of the program.
Anyway if the problem remains we will get back to it.
We are always happy to have your ideas and suggestions on improvement of the program functionality.
