Thumbnails for offline images?

Unread postby photoken » 19.04.2012 04:02

PhotoSafe 3.40
Win7 x64

Am I correct that when images are stored offline (on a CD, for exapmle) their thumbnails are not available for browsing unless the external media is connected?

If those thumbnails are not available, it is a very important feature for me to have.

Thumbnails are stored in database so they are available even if the media is offline. But if you click on one of those thumbnails tha program will detect that file is missing and will hide this file and will also check for availablility other files in the same folder.

In other words, you will not be able to use HPS to browse offline media.

It would be nice to have an off line mode then, where availability checking is suspended until checked back in.

I agree. In fact, browsing offline images is one of the three most important things for me when managing a photo collection.

Perhaps simply displaying the thumbnail of the image with a small icon in its corner to indicate that the actual image is not available would be possible?

That is easy to implement. But there is bigger problem though. If you inserted and scanned several CDs, photos from all those CDs will be listed when you choose CD drive. To avoid this we need to show a list of offline media for each drive. We thought about such functionality but have not yet implemented it, I do not rememeber exaclty why.

Yes, you're exactly right. The database would need to track the Volume ID of the media (each CD, each USB stick, etc.) for this to work.

We will discuss this again internally and see if this does fit into program architechture.

Are CD/DVD already dead? There is no offline media any more... :)

Well, for archival storage, I'm more willing to trust bytes that are burned in to the aluminum layer of a DVD than the bytes that are just magnetic fields on an external drive or USB stick.
