photo load order

I'm trying to blend a stack of 40 microphotos. When I drop them in, the order changes to something apparently random, and the final picture is a mess. It seems to be associated with the incorrect order, but there does not seem to be a way of making the photos go into the list in the correct order. Even dropping them in one by one works for a few and then the next will be placed somewhere in the list but not in order. Sort ascending and descending does not appear to work at all.
Any clues as to what might be happening and how to fix it will be much appreciated.
