HELP NEEDED IN PROCESSING ISSUES

I use a Canon XTi/400D.
Recently downloaded a trial version of Helicon Filter ver 4.8. (A week ago.) It worked OK the first 2-3 days. Today the following problem occured which need to to be resolved:
1. It opened files in 16 bit resolution. So how to get it to open files in 8 bit?
2. Whenever I tried to edit/correct the image (brightness/colour/etc.) even the slightest correction made the whole image become 'magenta' coloured. If I brought the values back to 0, the image became 'normal'. Do not know what to do.
3. That was the beginning. Now, the software does not open at all. When I click to open it, the computer screen flickers black a few times, but the software does not open. I uninstalled and reinstalled, no change.
Not sure how to proceed. Kindly advise.
