Focus Map of a single image?

Is there a way to produce a "focus map" from a single image? I have a large number of images that are going to be going through some processes that don't include focus stacking and I am looking for a tool that can automatically create alpha for the out of focus areas. I figure that Helicon is doing this under the hood. Is it possible to use helicon to identify sharp portions of the image without a stack?

No, this is not possible. I doubt that this would be efficient way anyway. Helicon Focus selects focused area by comparing images. If you try to find focused areas in single image, you will probably end up with edge detection or high pass filters. The problem is that magnitude of the contrast varies very much so it is very difficult to set threshold without image comparison.
