DCRAW noise parameter

Unread postby BillZM » 26.05.2008 19:42

I experimented with the -n <num> parameter for DCRAW in HF. It seems to be ignored. I'm OK with that, as I like the conversion results and we have further noise control within the HF editing. But out of curiosity, what level of DCRAW noise wavelet processing is being used? From elsewhere I've read that 50 helps with noise w/o affecting detail, 100 is better but has a slight effect on detail, 200 is probably too much detail loss. Dave Coffin suggests a range of 100 to 1000 apparently. Given the implementation in HF with subsequent noise editing available, I'd think a DCRAW default of 50 or 100 might be appropriate.

We just pass command line options to DCRAW and I hope that we do this correctly. From my undestanding, there is no sense to apply NR at low settings, you will see no effect at all.
