Helicon Focus comes with Helicon Remote utility which can remotely control Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. This might be a good solution for your friend. This utility also will support external stepper drivers which will allow to automate stack shooting.
True, Helicon Remote does exposure bracketing but Helicon Focus does not merge HDR images. We plan to add HDR function to Helicon Filter program in one of the next versions.
I assume, you already checked that lens is set to AF mode. What else is working? Do you see live view, can you change exposure setting? Are you able to make shots? Have you tried set Big steps in the prefernces? What lens do you have?
Usually every new stack is places in a new folder, so this type of batch processing will not work. The images for focus stacking are very similar and the only criterion to split them to stacks is the time difference between shots, which is not very reliable.
